PLEASE KEEP YOUR NEW PET SAFE INDOORS. AVOID THE PRESENCE OF TO MANY PEOPLE AND DISTRACTING NOISE UNTIL YOUR PET HAS BECOME USE TO ITS NEW HOME. BEING QUIET,
GENTLE AND LOVING IS IMPORTANT UNTIL YOU’RE NEW PET FEELS COMFORTABLE AROUND THE FAMILY. REMEMBER CHANGING HOMES CAN BE UPSETTING TO YOUR NEW PET, IT TAKES TIME TO ADJUST.
FEEDING: IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KEEP FRESH FOOD AND WATER AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES. Keep food dishes, water dishes and litter pans out of high traffic areas. Keep dry food out at all times. A cat’s stomach is small; they need food out all day to nibble on.
YOUR PET IS CURRENTLY BEING FED “DIAMOND-PROFESSIONAL” CAT FOOD, DRY. This food is available at most Superpetz stores. For those living in the Springfield area this food is also available at “Critter Feeds” on Rt. 41. “Iams” adult food is also nutritionally balanced. Your pet is not use to kitten food. If you give it to your pet expect some loose stool since it is richer than what your pet is use to. If you change foods mix gradually with the food provided by breeder. See last page for any “special” foods listed, if cat/kitten is on restricted foods.
DO NOT FEED YOUR PET THE CAT FOOD FROM THE GROCERY STORE OR STORE BRANDS, they can lead to urinary tract blockage, which can kill your pet. DO NOT FEED ANY KIND OF “GENERIC” BRAND CAT FOODS, as your pet can become anemic. Whenever considering a diet, other than that recommended by the breeder, always consult your vet and make the change gradual, to avoid diarrhea.
FOR LOOSE STOOL: Loose stool can be caused by the stress of changing homes or the change in water and food.
NOTE: AVOID COWS MILK---it can cause intestinal upset and pain in your pet. Contrary to popular belief cats do not need milk to be happy and healthy.
VACCINES: Make sure your pet gets its yearly vaccine. This will help to keep your pet healthy and have a better life. As stated in the contract you signed to get your pet, this breeder does not recommend the Feline Leukemia and the FIP vaccines. There have been many deaths attributed to the giving of the FIP vaccine. As stated in the articles given in this kitten kit there have been serious problems directly related to the giving of the Feline Leukemia vaccines. Please read these articles and make an educated decision regarding these vaccines.
DISCIPLINE YOUR CAT/KITTEN: Please remember you NEVER-EVER discipline a cat the way you do a dog. Spanking your cat will only lead to it being afraid of you, a condition that could last forever. If your pet gets on things you do not want it to get on, use a squirt bottle, set on stream. Squirt the cat each time it gets on what ever it is you don’t want it to. This will usually break the cat from getting on counters, et. If your pet starts not using the litter pan, try different litter to start-see next paragraph.
LITTER: DO NOT USE SCENTED LITTERS, your pet was not raised with scented litter, cats/kitten that are not raided with scented litters often will not use them. Your pet is use to having its litter pan scooped every day; a dirty litter pan can cause your pet to stop using the littler pan. Keep the pan is a quiet area, away from the main active of the house and children. Scooping litter is fine, Premium Choice litter is what your cat/kitten has been use to, just be sure to scoop it daily. If you use regular clay litter, scoop daily and change completely once a week. For multiple cat households, you should have one LARGE litter pan per two cats.
GROOMING: COMB AT LEAST TWICE A WEEK to prevent matting. Thicker coats may require more frequent grooming. More combing is need when the spring shedding occurs. Use a metal comb, not a brush. A brush will not get to the under coat. When combing, go slowly, be patient and careful. Make this an enjoyable part of your time with your pet. If hair is matted or snarled, work it loose with your fingers. When done combing your pet, place it on the floor, don’t let it jump down. This way your pet knows when the grooming is done. If your pet gets a messy bottom, comb the bottom, and then wash with a wet cloth and dry, it helps t keep the fur trimmed on the bottom.
BATHING: comb the cat before bathing to get out all tangles. It is best to bath in the kitchen sink, since they feel more secure and are less likely to fight you. Place a rubber mat; cut to size, in the sink to prevent slipping. Use a gentle, luke warm spray to wet the cat. DO NOT WET THE HEAD AND NEVER-EVER GET WATER IN THE CATS EARS! Shampoo once with “Dawn” regular dishwashing liquid, diluted two parts Dawn to one part water, rinse. Second shampooing should be with a tearless cat shampoo or an Oatmeal based shampoo for cats (people shampoos are a on-no, they can be much to harsh for cats).
ALWAYS rinse well, shampoo residue left in the coat can cause the cat to scratch a lot. To help break down the shampoo and get a clean coat mix ¼ cup white vinegar in one gallon of water, pour over the cat then rinse with warm water-rinse completely.
TO DRY: Wrap cat in a towel to blot the coat. While wrapped in towel take a damp washcloth to clean the face and external ears. This is also a good time to cut the toenails. Blow-dry the cat a section at time, unwrapping a portion of the cat as you go. It is best to start with the hide quarters and work up. NEVER LET A BLOW DRYER BLOW DIRECTLY INTO THE CATS FACE AND NEVER LET THE CAT JUMP DOWN BEFORE ALL TRACES OF DAMPNESS ARE GONE---then “set” the cat down.
EAR CARE: clean ears with a cotton ball, dampen with lukewarm water. Always squeeze excess water out. Q-Tips can be used for the crevasses in the ear but DO NOT put in so far that you couldn’t see the tip. If you see debris further down in the ear ask your vet about cleaning them.
EYE CARE: Wipe eyes with a “white” paper towel as needed. Always wipe toward the nose to prevent stain from spreading. A red-brown eye stain is not unusual in the Persian breed.
PESTICIDES: Pesticides, such as Blackflag, Roach powder, ect. Can be DEADLY to your pet. Commercial pesticides are particularly harmful as many contain “DURSBAN” which, even in a small amount can kill a cat. Pine cleaners and Lysol products can be harmful to ca5s when wet. Be very careful what kind of cleaners you use around your cat. Spic & Span and Simple Green are 100% safe to use around cats.
FLEA TREATMENTS: NEVER DIP YOUR Persian in flea dips unless cleared by your vet. DO NOT put flea collars on your Persian. Many Persians have very bad reactions to flea collars, dips and powders. Many are allergic to many across the counter flea products. If fleas or mites become a problem contact the breeder or your vet for suggestions on SAFE remedies. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THE USE OF ADVANTAGE OR FRONTLINE AS A FLEA CONTROL. These can be gotten at your vets.
TOYS: Ping Pong Balls, boxes, Catnip toys, empty 35mm film canisters, practice gold balls and wadded up pieces of notebook paper make good and
SAFE toys for you cat. DO NOT LET YOUR CAT PLAY WITH STRING OR YARN unless you are on the other end. PUT OUT OD REACH WHEN YOU ARE NOT THERE. String and yarn can cause death if ingested. Plastic wrapper or plastic bags, rubber bands, tinsel, Easter grass are all very dangerous to a cat and cause you a
VERY BIG vet bill or even cost your cat it’s life.
PLANTS: Keep plants out of your cats reach, many are deadly to cats.
MOST OF ALL ENJOY YOUR NEW PET AND TREAT HE/SHE AS YOU WOULD ANY NEW MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY. Every kitten/cat has a different personality and each one wants to fit in and be loved.
REMEMBER - they love to run free, sleep with you, lay in a sunny window and
THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON IN THEIR LIFE IS----YOU. You are your kitten/cats best friend, they depend on you to protect them from harm, to give them love and a wanted feeling.
BE AWARE, BE WISE, AND PLAY IT SAFE AND YOU WILL ENJOY MANY YEARS OF WONDERFUL COMPANIONSHIP WITH YOU PET.
PLEASE EMAIL IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, thank you.
